Congratulations to one of our Meet the Author Chairs, Emily Barth Isler, whose second book for kids ages 9-14, THE COLOR OF SOUND, comes out Tuesday, March 5th! The book features a 12-year-old neurodivergent violin prodigy who somehow meets a version of her own mother when she was 12, in one magical, life-changing summer. Jason Langston is the author of his self-published book A Baboon in my Room. He was inspired to write it as a result of a made-up family language game that he and his four kids played together. Eren Unten is the illustrator of I Am Helpful and several other books such as Star Wars: I Am a Hero. She is also a former Stevenson parent! Alda P. Dobbs spoke to the 4th and 5th grade classes about her historical fiction book Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna. She was inspired from her great-grandmother’s stories that happened during the Mexican Revolution.
Jennifer Jackson (a Stevenson parent) and Miry Whitehill read their book Our World is a Family to the TK- 1st grade classes, and talked about migrating families. They also touched upon Miry's non-profit organization Miry’s List, which welcomes new arrival refugee families in the United States. During this time they provided us with a link to share with our families. They give tips on writing letters to refugees to help them feel welcome in the United States. Anyone can write a letter! Lindsey Leavitt, author of her new book Willis Wilbur Wows the World and the Commander in Cheese series to name a few, spoke to the 2nd and 3rd grade classes. She talked about how she became an author, the process of writing a book, and what her life is like as an author. She started with a love a reading from the 2nd/3rd grade on, and was inspired by books that she read in elementary such as Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Clearly, The BFG by Roald Dahl, and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.
